dipity – do

August 22nd, 2009 in social media by tmac313

Need a visual timeline or newswire for your blog or web site? Dipity takes your social media accounts and consolidates them into a cool interactive widget (see below) that automatically updates when you post anything to your accounts…be patient though and give it enough time to update. You can also set up topics using keywords that the application will then search the web for and place any post regarding the topic into a timeline or news feed.

Once you add your sources or events, it is simple to embed the code into your blog post or onto your web site. Click on the “Embed Widget” in the upper right hand corner, then you can choose to create a timeline, flipbook or list widget (play with them and see what works best for your purposes), configure size and color, copy the code and paste into your page. Be patient as the application has now added advertising that comes up with each custom setting…I find this a minor nuisance, but understand the need to pay the bills.

I set up an account for my personal and business social media accounts. Here you see it in the timeline format:

There is one limitation to the application though. You can only connect to 17 social media sources plus RSS feeds. I do not know if there is a limit to the number of RSS feeds you can have. I have two blogs fed through to my Dipity account. I would like to see a few more social media sources added here.

Besides being a great graphic, using it to track what I have been doing and getting a sense of where my time and energy has gone is helpful. It also pinpoints what more I might need to focus on. It’s also a great way to follow current events, political leaders, news feeds…there are endless possibilities. I found Dipity on Jennifer Granholm’s web site where it is being used as a newswire. I have to say, I have been impressed with the way some of our political leaders are using social media now.

What ways can you see using this tool?

Thanks for the great write up. In terms of social services, in addition to the 17 Dipity currently supports, what else would you like to see added to this list?

Thanks for the comment and asking for feedback. I would like to see LiveJournal, Photobucket, Shelfari, Technorati, Facebook (mainly for pages), MySpace and Diigo added. I do really like that I can have more than one RSS blog feed though.

Great job with the application. I look forward to seeing where it goes.
